Why Kala
What we do differently,
and why it matters
This page is not a list of promises. It is an account of the specific habits and working standards that shape every job we take on.
Back to HomeThe main points
Six things that shape the work at Kala
Assessment before commitment
We examine every watch before agreeing to any work. You receive a written assessment note and a clear recommendation — with no expectation that you will proceed.
Mechanical movements only
We work exclusively with mechanical timepieces. This focus means a deeper, more specific familiarity with the movements, tolerances, and common failure points we encounter.
Nothing decided without you
For restoration work, every cosmetic decision is discussed before anything is done. We do not polish, refinish, or alter any part of a watch without your explicit agreement.
Written service documentation
Every completed service comes with a written record covering the work performed, timing results, and any observations made during the process. This record stays with you.
Timelines we hold to
We do not take on more work than we can complete within the timeframes we quote. If something changes, we contact you to discuss it — we do not simply let a deadline pass quietly.
Pricing that does not shift
The estimate we provide is the cost you pay. We do not add charges for discovered complexity without discussing it with you first and obtaining your agreement before continuing.
Expertise
Years working with mechanical movements
Narong Chaiprasit, Kala's founder, has worked with mechanical watches since 2003 — beginning under a Swiss-trained watchmaker in Chiang Mai before establishing the Bangkok workshop in 2009. The team includes a watchmaker trained in Osaka, with particular depth in timing regulation and balance adjustment.
- Swiss and Japanese calibre experience
- Vintage and contemporary movements
- Complex complication awareness

Timegrapher testing on every movement service
Results are recorded across multiple positions and shared with the client as part of the service documentation.
Grade-appropriate lubricants only
We use the correct viscosity oils and greases for each component type — no general-purpose substitutes.
Process & Tools
Working with the right equipment for the job
A clean, methodical disassembly matters as much as the reassembly. We use purpose-made horology tools — watchmakers' screwdrivers, case openers, rodico, and ultrasonic cleaning equipment calibrated for delicate components. No improvisation with unsuitable implements.
- Ultrasonic cleaning for movement parts
- Multi-position timegrapher measurement
- Purpose-built horology workbench
Client Experience
A service that respects your time and your watch
We understand that leaving a watch with someone requires a degree of trust. We work to maintain that trust through communication — written updates at key stages, a clear record of what was found and what was done, and a prompt reply to any question you may have during the service period.
- Condition photographed at drop-off
- Progress updates during longer jobs
- Post-service follow-up for full overhauls
What clients tell us matters most
- Knowing the cost before work begins
- Receiving an honest view of the watch's condition
- Being consulted before any cosmetic changes
- Collecting a watch that keeps noticeably better time
How we compare
A straightforward comparison
This is not a criticism of other workshops. It is a description of how we work, and where our approach differs from what is commonly offered.
| Aspect | Typical providers | Kala |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-work assessment | Often not offered as standard | Included with every job |
| Written condition report | Rarely provided | Provided after every assessment |
| Timegrapher results shared with client | Uncommon practice | Included in service record |
| Cosmetic changes discussed first | Often decided without asking | Always discussed and agreed |
| Fixed quote before work begins | Price may change after opening | Written estimate, no surprises |
| Post-service follow-up | Not typically offered | Standard for full overhauls |
What sets us apart
Specific to Kala, not generic claims
Mechanical focus, without exception
We have chosen not to work on quartz or battery-operated watches. This is a deliberate decision that allows us to remain focused and not dilute our knowledge across entirely different technology types.
Work discussed at every stage
For restoration jobs, we check in with you before making decisions about case finishing, dial treatment, or any part of the watch that carries aesthetic weight. The record of these conversations is part of the documentation we provide.
Honest about limits
Not every watch is within our scope. If a piece requires expertise we do not have, we say so. We would rather decline the work than take on something we cannot do well, and we will help point you toward the appropriate specialist.
Results you can measure
Timekeeping performance before and after a service is something we can show you. Our service documentation includes timegrapher readings, so you have an objective basis for comparing the watch's performance once you start wearing it again.

Bring your watch in for an assessment
There is nothing to decide until you have heard our view on the watch. A conversation with us costs nothing, and we are glad to help you understand what the piece may need.
